Sydney
- Australia
A
spectacular dawn arrival off Sydney Heads was a great opener for our full
approach through to Sydney's inner harbour. After a circle under the harbour bridge we drop anchor with the opera house as a backdrop. Later we leave Fallado
on a mooring in protected Middle Harbour while we spend Christmas with my family
in Wangaratta, country Victoria. By mid January we are ready to push further south, to the
township of Eden, where we wait for a weather window to jump across Bass Strait
to Tasmania. At the end of January we set out, only to be forced to turn back
once we have entered Bass Strait when the mainsail unintentionally jibes and
breaks the sheave at the top of the mast. When we finally get another break in
the weather its already well into February and we decide we must skip Tasmania
and continue around the coastline. Our plan is to sail right across the Great
Australian Bight and through to Fremantle, on Australia's west coast. We must
manage it while we have a short period of easterly winds, rather than the
predominant westerlies.
