Ascension
Island - South Atlantic Ocean
We
had earlier thought that the neighbouring island of Ascension was off limits to
everyone except the military, however many of our new friends on St Helena
encourage us to call in, giving us the names of family who live and work there
to look up. Our impending arrival on the island had been announced ahead, as we
are delivering the outgoing mailbag from St Helena. Both Britain and the US have
airforce bases on the island, it's also a NASA tracking station and BBC relay
station, in fact the island is literally bristling with antennas! We actually
get to see quite a bit of its volcanic interior, as the deputy governor treats
us to a tour, in his official vehicle with the Union Jack fluttering up front...
