Espirito
Santo - Vanuatu
After
heading back south to spend the cyclone season in New Zealand, we return the
following winter to the tropics, calling first into Noumea, the capital of New
Caledonia. The six day passage north was a good one, and after enjoying the
culinary delights of this French colony we leave New Caledonia and sail on to
Vanuatu. Our arrival in the capital, Port Vila, coincides with the anniversary of independence and we are able to watch all kinds of traditional
dance performances. A trip to the southern island of Tanna lets us witness the
incredible Yasur volcano, erupting violently, from extremely close range. We
also assist our friend Christian Eckhoff in salvaging his yacht Donella after
she had foundered on a reef near Port Resolution. In the northern island of
Espirito Santo we trek through the jungle to visit an isolated village that
lives without any of the trappings of modern civilization. As a sign of
acceptance of their culture, we dress ourselves in their "clothing".
